[6 MONTH UPDATE] JOURNEY TO STARTING AN ONLINE BUSINESS

[6 MONTH UPDATE] JOURNEY TO STARTING AN ONLINE BUSINESS

Wow! So it has been half a year since I started trying to create an online business! How far have I actually come?

Six months ago I had little to no concept of what I wanted to, but knew that I wanted to make money online. At the time I had been paid to write SEO articles in the past and thought that I would continue to write SEO articles, become a copywriter and then move on from there. Now, I am in a completely different mindset of what I want to achieve and how I want to make money online.

It has actually been quite funny reading my earlier posts and seeing how optimistic and excited I was 6 months ago. It is great to see that I am still as optimistic and excited as I was back then.

Anyway, the last month has been unproductive to say the least. It seems to be that as soon as I seem to be making any traction, I stop and allow myself to take an undeserved break. I’m not saying that I have done nothing, but the time that I have spent working on my blog has been wasteful.

Progress

1. New Computer

I finally bought a new macbook pro! It has meant that I’ve had access to an extremely fast and reliable laptop over the past few weeks. Getting use to the apple style of computer hasn’t been as difficult as I thought as it’s extremely user friendly. I’m definitely going to be taking full advantage of this purchase over the coming months.

Now that I have a laptop again, I can start doing screen recordings (using Quick Time Player) for all the lessons that I want to add into my course.

2. Schedule

Surprisingly I have been able to stick to my schedule of working from 11am – 2pm, Monday – Friday quite well. Although there have been some days that I missed due to silly excuses, I have allocated the necessary time each week to stick to my routine of working on my business.

As I said last month, I need to start being more productive in the time that I have. Starting next week I plan on increasing the time by an hour and working from 10.30am –  2.30pm.

3. Writing

I have finally written 4 blog posts on MoveYourLifeAbroad! The posts need to be edited and once I have done that I can launch the site. I will have this done in the next 2 – 3 days, so I’m really looking forward to that.

It’s funny to see how much easier I find it writing these monthly updates than I do writing blog posts. Perhaps because when I’m writing a blog post I have to do research. But mainly I think it’s because I’m nervous that if I write a poor post, people won’t return to MoveYourLifeAbroad.com. However, on this site LewiBlake.com, I don’t really mind if anyone reads the posts, so I can quickly write what I am feeling and not worry about others.

Set Backs

1. Productivity

As I stated earlier, my productivity has lagged substantially over the past month. It seems that I complain about my lack of productivity every month. I really have to man up and do the work that I say I’m going to do, otherwise I’m still going to be trying to launch this online business 5 years down the track.

Man Up Lewi!!!

2. Motivation

A few times over the past month my motivation has been lacking. I have been thinking how much easier it would be to just get out of hospitality and find a job that I can have as a career.

Some of the jobs I have thought about doing over the past month:

-Primary School Teacher
-Fireman
-Policeman
-Recruiter
-Salesperson
-Graphic Designer

I just have to keep telling myself that it’s all worth it! Although I may be getting sick of working in hospitality, it allows me the freedom to have more time to procrastinate, whoops, I mean work on my online business.

Lessons Learned

1. Plan, Plan, Plan!

I keep saying it but I never do it. I know that planning what I hope to achieve is one of the best productivity hacks but I still don’t do it!

I have now written a plan of the steps I need to take to create the lessons for my course by the end of 2016. I’ll be creating 2 lessons of my course every week. In theory, I would love to be able to write a blog post for each lesson each week, but I know that this will require a lot of time.

Looks like I will have to start being productive again. I am ever so hopeful!

Now that I have a plan of what I hope to achieve in the next 4 months, all I have to do is write the daily plans of what I need to do, to reach my 4 month goal of completing all the lessons.

Note to self: Get the lessons completed in the timeframe that you planned. Remember you can always edit and add to them later!

2. Accountability

Yet another productivity hack that I’ve stopped implementing, having some sort of accountability set up is the ultimate way to achieve your goals.

This time my brother and I are taking it to a new level. We will be having weekly meetings (yet again) where we discuss our business goals for the week and what we are going to achieve. These are going to be tangible goals that can be measured.

For example: Create 2 lessons for your course, write 2 blog posts, send out a newsletter.

If we don’t achieve ALL of our goals for the week then we’re going to lose $50. That may not sound like a lot of money to most of you but for us it is substantial. Considering we both have weekly spending budgets of $100 – $150 per week, losing $50 a week will hurt.

My brother, is going to put his money towards buying his girlfriend new clothes (because she has a shopping addiction, way too many clothes and he hates it). I’m still not sure what I am going to put my money towards. If you have any idea’s, please tell me in the comments below. Remember the money has to be put towards something that I hate, so I have more motivation to achieve my weekly goals.

It will be interesting to see in 4 weeks time, after my next update, how much money we have had to give away or if it makes us work harder to achieve what needs to get done.

Future Direction

I plan on launching MoveYourLifeAbroad later this week, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled. All I have to do is edit my 4 blog posts, double check all the pages work, and hit launch. I’m really excited about this because it means that I can finally stop worrying about building pages and start creating some great content to share with my audience (which doesn’t exist at this stage).

By my next update I should have created 6-8 lessons (2 per week) and be closer to my goal of completing all the lessons by the end of the year.

You may have noticed that I took down all of the other posts from this website except for the monthly updates. As I said last month, I want lewiblake.com to be a recap of my journey to starting an online business and show the progress that I have been making, my struggles and my thoughts. I didn’t feel like any of the VLOG’s or other blog posts on this page were relevant to this goal, so I took them down.

That’s all for now guys.

Thanks for reading, and see you next month!
