Monthly Updates

Move Your Life Abroad is finally launched!!! Im pretty excited about the site being up and have really started to make some progress. I currently have about 8 blog posts written with another 2 coming in the next couple of days.

1. Membership Guys

One of the great things that I discovered this month was The Membership Guys. They’re a cool little niche website that has video tutorials of everything you need to know to do with membership sites. I became a member of their membership site, went through a few of the tutorials and realised that it wasn’t the right time to be building my site.

Basically the best time to be creating a course or membership site is after you have been putting out content for a little while, have at least a small audience, and can ask them what they would like in a course. This has obviously set me back a little since I was meant to be building my course already.

2. Planning

For the first time since I started this journey, I have finally been doing a little planning. Although it hasn’t been perfect, I have been planning which blog posts I want to do each week and how I want to structure them. This means that when it comes time to sit down and write the posts, it is quick and easy.

3. Newsletter

I sent out my first weekly newsletter for Move Your Life Abroad which I’m obviously pretty excited about. Out of the 3 or 4 websites I have started in the past (including this one), this is the first newsletter I have sent out. It was actually quite easy and I’m using Active Campaign as my email marketing software.

It’s going to take a bit of time to grow my email list and learn the best way to do email marketing but I’m excited.

4. Accountability

My brother Tom and I have been doing the $50 accountability for the past couple of weeks. It seems to have been working well as I have been completing what I set out to achieve each week. Maybe this means I need to set myself bigger goals so I have to work a little harder.

5. Research

I have become a research beast over the past couple of weeks. I am spending most of my free time either researching about online business or travel and moving abroad. I really enjoy having two things to research about because it means that if I get bored from learning about online business, then I can research more on travel, and vice versa.

Set Backs

1. Routines

Over the last week especially, I’ve fallen into the trap of hitting snooze on my alarm. I’ve been using the fact that I’m sick as an excuse to sleep in and start working later. Because I’ve been getting my work done anyway, I haven’t felt the need to wake up early to start working on my website.I know now that my morning routine doesn’t have to take 1 and a half hours but can instead be done in an hour.

This is definitely something that I’m going to focus on starting again tomorrow. I don’t want to fall into bad habits again.

2. Internship

I haven’t returned to my internship for the past couple of months. It got to the point where I hadn’t gone for so long because of my broken laptop, and then I just never returned. I’m not sure if I will be returning in the next couple of months before I leave or not.

3. Fun

Something I’ve been struggling with a lot over the past few months is taking time off to do something fun. I’m constantly in a state where I feel like I need to be working on my website, and if I’m not I feel guilty. I’m also trying to save as much money as possible before I move overseas in February, which has made me think I can’t spend any money on anything fun.

To solve this problem, I’m going to sit down, write a list of fun and cheap activities that I can do during the week, and try and schedule in at least one activity per week to do on my day off. For example surfing, tennis or football.

Lessons Learned

1. This is going to take a long time

After joining the membership site academy and seeing all of the work that is required to build an online course, I’ve realised that it’s going to take even longer than I thought. Unless you’re able to focus 100% of your time on building your online business, it takes a lot of time.

Having less than 4 months left of work in hospitality excites me, because it means that I can find somewhere to settle down in South America for a few months, and work on Move Your Life Abroad full time. Obviously I’m going to have to set some very specific goals that I need to achieve and smash them out. Having this focus and working full time on my online business will be an amazing feeling because I won’t always have to try and work on it in my spare time like I’m doing at the moment.

Future Direction

So what do I hope to focus on in the next month or so?

Firstly I hope to grow my email list to 100+ subscribers. At the moment there are 4 subscribers (all family) but I have been looking at strategies to grow email lists and will start implementing them next week. This is going to involve creating a lead magnet (which will be finished early next week) to make visitors want to join my email list.

Next I want to continue posting 2 blog posts per week and continue adding quality content to my blog. This is going to include well researched posts that are relevant to helping others move abroad.

Lastly I’m going to focus on social media. In the next couple of weeks, I’m going to get active on Facebook and Twitter. This will help make others see me as an authority in my industry and will allow me to interact more easily with my audience.

That’t all for now. I’m excited to see what the next month holds!
